26. (1) Every person driving a motor vehicle upon any public highway must carry with him his driver’s permit and the registration certificate of the motor vehicle and the certificate of insurance or of financial responsibility provided for in sections 97 and 102 of the Automobile Insurance Act. The driver of a vehicle possessed for hire shall be either a chauffeur or the lessee of the vehicle; if he is a chauffeur, he shall produce, on request by a constable or a peace officer, (a) the certificate of registration of the vehicle, (b) his driver’s permit; if he is the lessee, he shall produce (a) the certificate of registration of the vehicle, (b) his driver’s permit and (c) a card from the registered owner stating that the vehicle is at the time under lease without a chauffeur. The obligation to carry one’s driver’s permit with one also applies to the holder of a driver’s permit who assists a learner-driver driving a motor vehicle on a public highway.
(2) Such persons must remit such documents when requested to do so by any officer authorized by the Bureau who is provided with an identification certificate signed by the director establishing that he is charged with the carrying out of this act, or at the request of a constable and peace officer or a municipal police officer or, when the motor vehicle concerned is involved in an accident, at the request of any interested person, thus allowing such person, constable or peace officer to examine such documents and make notes. Subject to the other provisions of this act, such documents must be returned to their owner as soon as they have been examined.
(3) For the purposes of this section, the original certificates and permits may be replaced by a photographic reproduction or duplicate of such documents, issued by the Bureau.
