Regulation respecting the administration of medication by pharmacists

1. A pharmacist must ensure, before administering a medication to a patient, that it is appropriate to administer that medication.

The pharmacist must, for that purpose, obtain the patient’s consent and, if applicable, provide the patient with the appropriate instruction.

1.1. A pharmacist may administer any vaccine to a patient 6 years of age or over. However, a pharmacist may administer required travel vaccines and the influenza vaccine to a patient 2 years of age or over.

1.2. In an emergency situation, a pharmacist may administer an over-the-counter medication or salbutamol.

2. The pharmacist enters in the patient’s record the dose, administration route and time of administration of the medication and the consent obtained from the patient.

3. A pharmacist practising community pharmacy must keep up-to-date, by obtaining an attestation issued by the Fondation des maladies du coeur du Québec, the Red Cross or St. John Ambulance, his or her knowledge of cardio-respiratory resuscitation and manoeuvres to apply in case of obstruction of the respiratory tract of an adult, a child and a baby, including the use of an automated external defibrillator and a bag-valve mask ventilation system.
