7. The maximum number of weeks of maternity benefits or exclusive benefits for the person, in connection with pregnancy or delivery, is 18 or, in the case of an election pursuant to section 18, 15.
Payment of benefits shall begin not earlier than the 16th week preceding the expected week of delivery and end not later than 20 weeks after the week of delivery. However, payment may end after the expiry of the 20 weeks, but may not exceed the 52nd week after the week of delivery, if the child is hospitalized and if, on request, the benefit period is extended for the duration of the child’s hospitalization.
Payment of the benefits provided for in the first paragraph may also end after the expiry of the 20-week period, but may not exceed the 52nd week after the week of delivery if, in the cases and for the time determined by regulation of the Conseil de gestion, the benefit period is extended.

However, the payment may end after the expiry of the 18 weeks, but before the end of the benefit period, if the child is hospitalized and if, following a request, the weeks of benefits are suspended during the child’s hospitalization.
The Conseil de gestion may, by regulation, determine other cases in which, following a request, payment may end after the expiry of the period prescribed in the second paragraph. The regulation shall determine how many weeks of benefits are suspended in each case.
