372. After receiving a ballot, the elector shall proceed into one of the compartments of the polling station, mark the ballot in one of the circles and then fold up the ballot so that the initials on the back of it can be seen without opening it; he shall leave the compartment and allow the initials of the presiding officer to be examined by that officer, by the poll clerk and by any agent of a candidate who wishes to do so; then the elector, in full view of those present, shall remove the counterfoil and remit it to the presiding officer, who shall destroy it, and the elector himself shall place the ballot in the ballot box.
